Snatch Paste

Compilation LP featuring an assortment of tracks from the first three Snatch Tape compilations.

Side A
David Jackman - Blues
(2 Track version of the piece from Snatch 3)
Prior to developing the signature claustrophobic Organum sound David Jackamn made a number of pieces that used long slow loops of bowed cymbal and ezraj. Blues from 1981 captures this raw yet minimal sound well.

Storm Bugs - Dull Sound of Breath Inside a Tin
(Originally from the Gift cassette)
Comprised of loops recorded on the same valve Revox pictured on the reverse of the LP sleeve, Dull Sound of Breath mixes a sea saw wash of tape percussion sounds all drawn from the one cymbal with a repeating piano motif and a semi operatic vocal detailing the exhalation in question.

Mannequin Moves - The Girls You Left Behind
(Originally from Snatch 2)
“Thinks of these things even as you drop” sing the Mannequins in their atmospheric account of the contrasting pleasures of the flesh and shrapnel.

Philip Sanderson - Under Press of Sail
(Originally from Snatch1, 3 and Reprint)
Recoded by yours truly at the tender ago of 18 and originally released under the Claire Thomas & Susan Vezey moniker Under Press of Sail shows what happens when a circuit bending teen gets his hands on two VCS3s and a sequencer.

Tony Clough - Untitled
(Originally from Snatch1)
Like some broadcast from a forgotten ether Tony Clough combs the short wave band to produce strangely melodic layers of Morse and modulating interference.

Side B
The N4s - N4
(Originally from Snatch1)
Featuring possibly one of the sweetest fuzz guitar parts ever recorded combined with a heavily compressed drum machine and faltering vocals, the N4’s owe something to Harmonia and Neu whilst sporting a bass line that could do ACE proud.

Alien Brains - Song
(Originally from Snatch 3)
Alien Brains have achieved something of a mythical status despite the (or perhaps because of) almost complete unavailability of their original cassette releases. Fronted by Nigel Jacklin a man who now devotes his life to Objective Research, Alien Brains releases often included collaborations with the brothers Rupenus and Philip Sanderson to name but a few. This track is a solo Jacklin effort taken from Snatch 3 and features a nice police radio account of a Chinese Restaurant Disturbance with the usual pop bruit concrete the Brains pioneered.

Karl's Empty Body - 1464
(Originally from Snatch1)
For many post punk DIY equals awkward jangly guitar bands with self-referential song titles and faltering rhythms. Snatch Tapes tended to steer more towards the experimental end of the jiffy bag scene but Karl's Empty Body tale of thwarted love has a definite verse chorus structure and solid beat all however suitably mangled by being fed through a VCS3.

Oroir - Call
(Originally from Snatch 3)
Oroir released the now sought after single Elevation on Crystal Groove in 1979 and recorded a follow up LP, which sadly was never released. This track with its moody almost lo-fi ambience hints at what that record might have sounded like. Also lost in the vaults are a series of recordings by Clip from Orior with David Jackman and Philip Sanderson. Check those attics now!

Claire Thomas & Susan Vezey - Diamonds & Ashes
(A different version of the track originally from Snatch 3)
No Snatch compilation would be complete without our dear pre-Raphaelite knob twiddles Claire and Susan. Now believed to be running a ladies fashion boutique in Basingstoke called Sensations the true identity of the pair was of course revealed many moons ago. This track, an alternate version of the one that originally appeared on Snatch 3 has David Jackman on flute loops and Philip Sanderson on tapes and electronics.
