Notes:
The aim of Telephone Music was to compile collaboartive and solo recordings made by Philip Sanderson and Michael Denton between 1981-85, though a Sanderson/Ball track 'Apsotrophe S' from 1986 was also included.
The project began when Denton arrived one summer's day in 1981 at Sanderson's 24 th floor Flat in Deptford and suggested they might work together on some music for a new video project he was making. With everyone out of London they were able to book some downtime in the electronic music studio in New Cross and in a couple of days had put together 'Thief - a man who steals secretly and without violence' using a combination of VCS3 synthesizer, treated vibraphone, and piano.
Over the next four years the two collaborated on a number of other pieces developing and expanding the mix of film soundtrack instrumentation combined with sparse stripped down electronics and taped short wave and police radio broadcasts. The vibes and keyboard parts give the tracks more than a hint of 50s spy movie menace whilst the electronics provides a harsher more musique concrete counterpoint.
The Telephone Music tape only compiled some of the collaborative recordings but a fuller and more comprehensive collection of re-mastered material is being assembled.
